Once enrolled in the program, the MSNE study guide and the program-specific regulations ("Fachprüfungsordnung MSNE") will be a valuable source of information. In addition, the following information will be helpful.
Learning Agreements / Electives
All electives must be mentor-agreed in order to become part of your transcript (Master's as well as Research Excellence Certificate). We have prepared a Learning Agreement form sheet for this purpose. Please fill the form along with your mentor, mutually sign it and send a scan to email@example.com
Deadline for summer semester is September 30th, deadline for winter semester is March 31st.
All results (i.e. grades) in modules not listed in your individual Learning Agreement automatically become part of a transcript appendix, labeled with the semester of examination. Such additional modules do not count towards your 120 ECTS + 30 ECTS curriculum. It is not possible to convert such modules to MSNE Electives effective to the past.
Students are allowed to pick freely within all modules in the individual learning agreement. We consider all learning agreements received so far. There is no need to provide an updated learning agreement in case
- your intended schedule is changing and you are going to attend a module which is already included in your learning agreement at a later point in time.
- your set of electives included in the learning agreement(s) is still sufficient.
There is no need to pass all modules in your learning agreement. In case you once passed a module, you may not register for the same module once again. Hence, you may do more electives and pick the one with best results later.
Tip: Discuss your plans with your mentor early. You may agree on a superset of modules in your learning agreement in order to have some flexibility while aligning your individual electives schedule with mandatory modules schedule.
The curriculum includes 2 research projects. The curriculum suggests to do both projects in the first two semester breaks, hence students might decide to schedule them differently. The main part has to be completed in a blocked form, parts of the project can also be done in parallel to the lecture periode.
- Since you're supposed to present on your neuroengineering research in the "Neuroengineering Summit" (Mandatory Part of optional REC) as well, it is a good idea to perform at least one project during the first two semester breaks.
- You cannot upgrade a 6 week project to a 8 week project by starting another tiny project of two weeks duration.
The projects can be done at any research facility, as long as an MSNE examiner agrees to the research plan and signs responsible for the project. Research projects are assessed in a passed/not passed way.
Kindly use the forms provided at Department EI to register a research project. After successfull completion, your supervisor will inform the department on your successfull completion using another form.
How-to fill "Registration of the Research Internship/Research Project" form:
- Supervisior: The person who actually supervises the student (e.g. professor, post-docs, doct. candiates & contact information). Projects performed not at an institute operated by MSNE official examiners provide the name of the remote supervisor.
- Professor": Your MSNE examiner
- Chair/Professorship": Affiliation of MSNE examiner (e.g. ICS/TUM for Prof. Gordon Cheng)
Kindly ask your MSNE examiner to send this form electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org, no signature required.
Requirements and Assessment: The person finally giving a pass/not passed grade is your MSNE examiner at TUM. Therefore, the MSNE examiner will decide on the requirements with respect to your study program. In case of projects performed at external institutes (i.e. not under direct supervision by MSNE examiner), the remote supervisor may also have constraints.
The cooperation between MSNE examiner and remote supervisor is not formalized by MSNE regulations. Ideally, all three stakeholders agree on a work plan and deliverables before the project starts. Typically, this also safes effort on students' side. A good strategy is to agree with your MSNE examiner on report and presentation details first and provide this information to your remote supervisor in a second step. Most remote supervisors will adapt to this suggestion.
Exams are mainly scheduled in the last week of the lecture periode and in the subsequent two weeks. Retakes are offered at the end of the subsequent semester. Makeup module retakes are offered at the end of the same semster. Retakes might be offered in a different form (e.g. oral exam instead of written exam). Date, time and venue of exams will be announced in TUM-Online. You have to register for the exams in TUM-Online.
Project / Student Mobility Support
The MSNE program is pushing student's research profile. All students are encouraged to present their research work at conferences and workshops. Beside of the Neuroengineering Summit, it is also possible to attend at research conferences outside TUM.
In order to apply for funding, an abstract of the planned activity as well as a detailed cost plan has to be sent to email@example.com
Students are encouraged to suggest scientific projects, retreats, workshops ... and organize them in a self-responsible fashion, supported by the MSNE program. Applications may be provided anytime, hence at least 4 weeks in advance to the intended activity.
Elite Network of Bavaria
Beeing part of the MSNE program also offers you great oppurtunities for your carreer and professional network. As a member of the Elite Network of Bavaria, you will receive exclusive invitations to seminars, workshops and events. The ENB Community allows you to get in contact with other elite students and start to start activities jointly.
We expect from our MSNE students to participate in this peer group and to contribute to this unique institution for outstanding talents.
